Course Overview
By 2040, 45 billion, almost fifty percent of the world’s population are predicted will live in towns and cities of low income countries. Within the urban settlements almost half of the population is likely to live in informal settlements. Whilst presenting their inhabitants with an array of opportunities, informal settlements are often located in hazardous areas, lacking access to basic services, and highly vulnerable to a range of risks.
Providing sustainable protection for displaced people in urban areas will mean engaging politically with municipal authorities and integrating people of concern into urban governance systems.
Increasingly these populations also include refugees or those who are displaced by conflict, natural disasters and other drivers.
One of the foremost challenges in protecting displaced populations beyond camps is the difficulty of improving protection for the displaced without building unsustainable and potentially problematic parallel systems of service delivery
The topics to be covered include the following;
- An introduction to urban disasters
- Coordination approaches for urban emergencies
- Multi-sector assessments in urban environments
- Defining and targeting affected populations in an urban context; establishing rapport with them during emergencies

- Urban stakeholders in emergencies and communications
- Assessment of markets, cash and voucher programming
